In order to meet increasingly arduous vehicular CO2 emission targets, various `more-electric´ technologies are emerging, resulting in an increase in the peak vehicle electrical load. An attractive solution to meeting this electrical power requirement is to generate electrical energy from the exhaust gas by means of a turbogenerator system, consisting of a turbine-driven high-speed switched reluctance generator and an energy storage/power buffer. Such a system provides a significant improvement over current vehicle electrical architectures in terms of electrical power availability and fuel saving. The paper describes a prototype turbo-generator exhaust gas energy recovery system that has been manufactured and is currently undergoing testing.
