Abstract

Keywords: Car, Networking, Ethernet, Internet, Wireless Communications.

This paper presents a review of the computer and networking systems in the modern car and the vision of the vehicles of the future. Electronics in the car was first introduced for the automotive control and logistics. The vehicles are becoming intelligent mobile systems as more electronics and processing power is used. Benefits of integrated computing, communications and automotive technologies are increasingly becoming obvious, and include energy saving, emission limitations, ecology and environmental protection. This review points to the integrated technology contributions in vehicle and traffic safety, traffic management and accident avoidance. Data security is also addressed, considering that a car is a wireless communication system. Different computer systems and communication bus technologies were reviewed, as well as wired and wireless networks. Applications and protocols were analysed through their role in the vehicle control, vehicle to vehicle communications and communications up to the Internet level.
