Abstract

A field test conducted in the central city area of Berlin investigated the manner in which lorry drivers directed their attention when turning right with a heavy-haul tractor-trailer rig. In this study, appropriate equipment documented the drivers´ eye tracking during vehicle travel. Test results revealed great differences in viewing strategy among the individual drivers included in the study. Findings likewise disclosed that the drivers made very little effort to match their viewing behaviour to the various traffic situations encountered. In some cases, the drivers failed to take advantage of available observational possibilities. There is accordingly still a great unused potential for training and sensitizing of drivers: possibilities that could be exploited for the prevention of accidents between right-turning lorries and vulnerable road users.
