Abstract
The new integrated by-wire systems enable many new drivers interface and performance enhancement, such as more efficient braking, improved stability, adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance, corrections for cross wind and other.
All these features will enhance road safety under conditions that two important issues are provided: (1) high reliability and dependability of by-wire systems and (2) adequate adaptability of driver to this new environment. The engineering side has done so far a great advance and may provide a very dependable by-wire systems, which are well adapted to human requirements and resistant to possible human errors. However, this progress may be impaired by a lack of driver adaptability and by his inadequate behavior and training to control these advanced systems. Therefore, it is not a question whether by-wire systems are for certain safe or not. The main question is how to provide a proper driver behavior, how to train him to control by-wire vehicle adequately. The solutions are, obviously, primarily in hands of psychologists and social scientists not engineers.
