Abstract
The effects of graphite and chemical compositions on the damping capacity, thermal diffusivity and wear resistance of gray cast iron were examined in order to develop the material for disk brake rotor with lower squeal noise and brake judder. Logarithmic decrement and thermal diffusivity of gray cast iron increased with increasing carbon equivalent. Tensile strength, however, decreased with increasing carbon equivalent. These changes are caused by the length of graphite flake, and more than 200mm of graphite length was necessary to obtain the required properties. Brake disk rotors made of newly developed cast iron also showed a higher wear resistance compared with ordinary ones.
