Abstract
A numerical tool has been developed to compare different solutions for the engine and vehicle design through the assessment of global parameters ( for ex. Index of Performance). The model is based on a fully transient simulation of thermal fluid dynamics of the engine, coupled with a dynamic model of the power train. Results of simulations are the instantaneous engine outputs (in particular torque and RPM) linked to car performances through a power train and road vehicle model. At present full information can be achieved in terms of car performances. A potential, very promising application is the evaluation of different engine/ car matching solutions with respect to fuel economy and external noise control ( Pass by Test). The model has been tested on a 1.2 l 16 valves gasoline engine for a B-Fiat passenger car on dynamic test bench. Good agreement has been found between numerical simulations and experimental results. The proposed approach is proved to be fast and reliable.
