Abstract
The problem of reducing noise is one of understanding vehicle/tyre/road interactions and is of an interdisciplinary nature. Within a co-operation between PIARC (World Road Association) and FISITA (International Federation of Automotive Engineering Societies) a Working Group on Tyre Road Noise was founded. This paper presents the results of the working group in the form of a critical review of the international state of the art. The objective of the paper is to inform all persons involved in the engineering of road transport as to the current knowledge of noise generation mechanisms, test methodology and definitions, in order to enhance a common understanding.
