Abstract
Reduction of lead time for new engine development is a critical requirement for engine manufacturers. In recent years Federal-Mogul Powertrain Systems has deployed significant effort in pursuit of this challenge through a Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) strategy which focuses on Simultaneous and Predictive Engineering. The principle was to develop user friendly tools which would enable rapid generation of concept designs given limited engine details. In addition such systems had to be sufficiently flexible so as not to stifle design innovation. The paper describes the process of generating a 3D solid model and its associated proposal drawing. The 3D piston model then drives subsequent activities - Predictive Analysis, Die design and manufacture, and engine cycle modelling.
