Abstract
Noise and vibration problems have become mayor concerns of automotive braking systems. The present paper looks at the dynamic behaviour of disc brakes. In addition to impairing brake performance, judder gives rise to irritating hum noises. The authors investigate the mechanisms that generate disc vibration and ultimately noises. This modelling accounts also for the thermal phenomena resulting from friction. An analysis is made of the thermoelastic instability, which contributes to the nonuniform thermal distortion of the surface resulting in a normal vibration to the disc when the brake pads rub against it. The modelling is applied to the FEM analysis of a
McPherson-type suspension.
