Abstract
Three different areas concerning the joining of light weight structures are addressed. These are: tubular structure assembly, joining of aluminium alloys and structural adhesive bonding. In the first activity, methods for single-sided accessibility, like serial resistance spot welding, plasma arc welding and laser welding have been evaluated. For aluminium structures, the fatigue performance regarding joining methods, like laser welding, TIG welding and rivets have been verified. Finally, the potential in weight reduction utilizing a continuous adhesive bond line will be discussed, together with some practical design aspects.
