Abstract

Within the next 10 years, environmental pressures will demand vehicles capable of achieving very low CO2 emissions whilst meeting Euro IV legislation. These will represent a new class - “3 litre Cars”. However, they will also need to be competitive in terms of cost, driveability and NVH. The HSDI diesel engine has the potential to meet these requirements, however, significant challenges exist in producing the optimum design for the application. An inline 4 cylinder engine of 1.2l capacity has been shown to offer the correct attributes, but requires advances in terms of design and combustion technology. Recent progress in these aspects is illustrated using the example of the design and development of a 0.3 litre single cylinder engine.
