Abstract
The challenge of compatibility between trucks and cars been tackled by Renault Automobiles and
Renault Véhicules Industriels. In this paper, the specific problem of passenger cars crashing against heavy goods vehicles is described, as well as solutions for the truck design. The development of a special device in front of the truck, underneath the actual chassis, the Front Underrun Prevention System (FUPS), is described ; a full size car to truck impact is carried out, with crash conditions determined by road statistics (Premium truck / Mégane car) : using pre-test simulation, the FUPS is optimized in terms of global deformation modes and dynamic energy absorption, then tested full size at 65 km/h. Finally, future developments are discussed.
