Abstract
Since the beginning of the century, steel has been the favored material for the automotive sector:
- oil products were plentiful and cheap,
- weight was not a real problem,
- lightweight materials (plastic, aluminum, magnesium) were scarce and expensive,
- manufacturers had a strong "steel culture",
- protecting the environment was not as high a priority as it is today.
