Abstract
The main cause of death among the Spanish population between 1 and 44 years of age is trauma secondary to traffic accidents (1). A total of 6,378 Spanish motorists died in 1993 alone (1). The fact that this incidence is not higher is possibly due to the seat belt (SB), the use of which has been obligatory nationwide in intercity roads since 1975 and in cities since 1992.
