Abstract
While map databases continue to prove their value in route guidance systems, another promising suite of applications has emerged: Using digital map databases as sensor inputs to vehicle assistance and control functions. A very accurate map database can facilitate even more fundamental tasks than turn-by-turn route guidance. It can also help improve functionality over existing technologies that use sensor information to provide various assistance and safety functions in the vehicle.
