Abstract
In considering the land transportation in the 21st century, it is necessary to stress not only the convenience for the travelers but also the problems of preserving global environment and natural resources. As one of solutions for these problems, we propose a new concept of the Intermodal
System where the high-speed trains and very small passenger cars are combined together by utilizing the characteristics of highly safe and highly energy-efficient railroads and highly convenient automobiles. This system will be further supported by another new concept of the personal information supporting system utilizing fully the information and communication technologies to provide greater convenience to the travelers than before.
