Abstract
This paper presents the main findings of the Metropolis transport working group about « the car in the city », first delivered at the Metropolis 1996 Congress (Tokyo, April 1996). Metropolis is the World Association of the major Metropolises (58 members).
The first part is devoted to the Metropolis survey: the reasons for the success of the car in major metropolises, the problems caused by this very success, the most common practices in the fields of urban planning policy, transport policy and ongoing technological innovations.
The second part sets out the recommendations of the working group in order to improve urban accessibility, to preserve the quality of life and to ensure sustainable development.
