Abstract

The forecasted european regulation requirements for the exhaust emission for year 2005 (EURO

IV) are very demanding: there are not yet mature technological solutions to obtain the low NOx and particulates emissions required from Diesel engines: to respond to this situation, RENAULT launched a large research program on Diesel passenger cars, from which we present the systems we investigated. Every solution impacts fuel consumption and cost; with the two best affordable compromises, we can reach with difficulties the Council proposal values only on one protype vehicle, not on a whole mass production taking in account the normal scatter. Validation on durability of these solutions need to be done. Low sulfur fuel is required.
