Abstract

Many of the problems arising in ground vehicles (cars, vans, trucks, trains) deal with flow around or within the vehicle. The detail provided by numerical simulations can help to gain a better understanding of the physical mechanisms behind different phenomena and to find solutions which enhance the performance of particular components. This paper shows how Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques have been used in the study of vehicle flows at Fiat to find innovative methods and design solutions. First, a brief summary of evolving applications at Fiat over the last decade is presented. This is followed by a more detailed discussion of recent selected applications that have been carried out using the CFD++ software suite.
