Abstract
The Sport Utility Vehicle, if powered by a high speed direct injection Diesel engine, offers outstanding driveability and excellent fuel economy. To cope with the challenge of future emission legislation in USA and Europe, new engine and exhaust aftertreatment technologies are being developed. Emission compliance is accomplished in three major steps: (1) reduce NOx with cooled EGR, a flexible high pressure fuel injection system and an adapted combustion system, (2) reduce particulates with the Continuous Regeneration Trap, and (3) reduce NOx further with aftertreatment.
