Abstract

HSDI diesel powered vehicles are a necessity for achieving future CO2 (fuel consumption) legislation. However, some concern exists as to whether the HSDI diesel engine will be capable of meeting the challenge of future NOx- and particulate emission standards. The most promising solution in reducing both the pollutant emissions and the fuel consumption, is the engine development towards high thermal efficiency and low particulate levels and the application of highly efficient DeNOx catalysts. The subject treatise deals with AVL's NOx-adsorber (trap) development work with respect to rich combustion calibration, catalyst system layout and integration, ECU functionality and vehicle application & test. The achievements demonstrate that the NOx-adsorber system is a viable HSDI diesel exhaust gas aftertreatment device.
