Abstract

Automobile design (or styling as it is often referred to) falls into two closely related categories, that being art and the other being engineering. One simply cannot exist without the other. Although the sketch pad (or computer) is the tool of the artist in the initial phase, it is imperative that in teaching auto design in the school of art, engineering is of fundamental importance. Engineering in itself, is a study widely diverse in nature. And so is art. But teaching auto design requires a blending of the two. It is the prerogative of the author of this paper to explain how this is brought about when teaching automotive design courses at an industrial design school, college, or university.
