Abstract

This paper presents a CFRP turbocharger compressor impeller, featuring high strength, durability and reliability, which has been developed to replace existing aluminum-alloy impellers. The main objective of the material substitution was to lighten the impeller weight so as to improve acceleration response by reducing the moment of inertia of the rotating member. The application of such key technologies as surface treatment of the carbon fibers, a polymer alloy of super engineering plastics, mold and part design innovations, and nondestructive inspection has reduced the impeller weight by 48%, resulting in a substantial reduction of turbo lag.
