Abstract
Al2O3-SiO2-ZrO2 short fiber reinforced aluminum matrix composites have been produced by squeeze casting. The specimens were evaluated as a function of various mechanical and physical properties such as hardness, compressive strength, thermal expansion coefficient, wear resistance, and bolt axial tension relaxation. The results were compared with that of conventional cast iron and Al2O3 reinforced composite. In general, the addition of ZrO2 to Al2O3-SiO2 aluminum composites caused to increase in terms of hardness, compression strength. Al2O3-SiO2-ZrO2 system also showed an excellent wear resistancewhich is the most important characteristic, and is expected to replace cast iron to improve weight performance and engine performance. Crankshaft damper pulley hub has been produced by using Al2O3-SiO2-ZrO2 short fiber reinforced aluminum matrix composite. The products developed, as described above, provide a hub weight reduction fo approximately 50% and a crankshaft damper pulley weight reduction of approximately 25%.
