Abstract

The present study was carried out for combustion analysis using ionization probes of DI diesel engines. As the results, the ionization current in a near top dead center (TDC) with increase of torque and compression ratio was increased. The characteristics of ionization current and the cylinder pressure were very similar. The ignition delay and the combustion duration can be estimated from the ionization current signals. With increase of torque and compression ratio, the ignition delay became shortened. The combustion duration, on the contrary, became longer. The error of ignition delay and combustion duration obtained from ionization signals, pressure signals with each parameters was not very greater than 7%. Therefore, the ionization probe can be used for combustion analysis instead of using a relatively expensive pressure sensor.
