Abstract
The characteristics of the combustion and exhaust emission of a D.I. Diesel engine were investigated under a radial arrangement of 6 fuel sprays injected from a cylinder head and a parallel arrangement of 6 to 10 sprays injected from an elongated cylinder liner into a relatively large pancake-type combustion chamber. The parallel arrangement of the 6 to 10 sprays showed a shorter ignition delay than the radial arrangement of the 6 sprays. Changing from a radial arrangement of 6 the sprays to a parallel arrangement of the 6 sprays reduced the NOx and smoke emissions simultaneously with an increase in the indicated mean effective pressure.
