Abstract
Since new regulation is legalized for side impact in the United States (FMVSS 214), car designers should consider improving crashworthiness not only for the frontal impact but also for the side impact. This paper presents a computer simulation of passenger car structures and occupants in the side impact. Modelling of car body structure, dummy, and moving deformable barrier is described. The simulation is done by LS-DYNA3D on Cray Y-MP to calculate the deformation and movement of the structure and occupants. Relationship between door intrusion velocity and occupant injury criteria is investigated.
