Abstract

The impact of the operating environment and city characteristics on the energy consumption and emissions from transit buses is significant and will be discussed along with the benefits and problems associated with alternatives to diesel powerplants.

The Brisbane Hybrid Bus Project has developed 2 hybrid buses which demonstrate the use of various energy storage elements in bus applications. At least three energy storage mediums have been employed in each of the drivetrains to cope efficiently with various traffic conditions. Descriptions of the systems and their operation are included together with results from simulations and on-road testing.
