Abstract

In order to seize the opportunities given by the so called “niche models”, the carmakers have put a lot of effort in developing new architecture solutions and technologies that can guarantee profitability also for the low production volumes.

Starting from the experience of the European BRITE “Magdoor” project, UTS and Fiat Auto decided to launch a Joint Innovation Project to develop and test a new archetype of a Magnesium / Aluminium door for Luxury Sport Cars.

The project goal was to demonstrate and analyse the industrial feasibility of a new door made with unconventional technologies to assure performances, quality and low capital investment.

Starting from a reference model, a new project has been carried out by UTS, using the most advanced design tools available.

At the end of the developing phase, the project reached impressive enhancements especially in weight saving and part integration.

Under the full responsibility of UTS, more than twenty complete prototype doors were delivered to be tested to Fiat Auto in May 2001.

The experimental testing has been completed in November 2001 with a full technical approval.
