Abstract

The owner of a vehicle expects complete safety, optimum driving comfort, economical fuel consumption and low emission from a modern, ‘intelligent’ vehicle.

For the car manufacturers, this means anti lock braking and traction control systems, adaptive driving programs for transmission control systems, map-controlled gasoline and diesel engine management systems.

For the engineers, this means implementation of complex functions and algorithms in microprocessor-based electronic control units, the adaptation and optimization of these systems -the calibration - to different engines and vehicles, and the pressure of time and cost reduction. The objective of this presentation is to show an approach for the increase of efficiency in the development and calibration of ECUs. This approach will lead to time and cost reduction and is based on

- the support of the application engineer’s daily work with a box of standardized hardware and software modules

- the possibility to increase efficiency in calibration due to the introduction of standard processes and procedures supported by these stardardized modules and

- the familiarization and training of the users on only one system.
