Abstract

The thermal state of a rolling tyre is an important concerning for its energy saving (low rolling resistance), adhesion and reliability performances. In many cases, the thermal state and the energy losses analysis of the tyre elements is made using thermal models. These models use as data input the experimental measured tyre exterior surface temperatures.

This paper analyses the sidewall surface temperature variation during rotation of the rolling tyre under steady conditions and presents figures and conclusions about the data selection method that may be used in modelling studies. The analysis is made on figures obtained for a mid-size car tyre that rolls on a roadwheel under different conditions and the tyre surface temperatures were measured with a very accuracy infrared thermography system. These experimental results were used as input data in temperature distribution inside the tyre structure calculation, calculation accomplished with the help of a model elaborated by the authors.
