Abstract
This paper analyses various drive concepts with respect to their potential of lowering CO2 and other pollutant emissions. Starting from general technical measures like e.g. weight reduction the analysis passes on to advances in gasoline and diesel engines as well as fuel refining. For electric vehicles the emissions depend strongly on the energy mix in electric power generation. Finally, the configurations of hybrid electric vehicles are introduced and the effects of their different operational strategies on emissions together with results obtained from realized concepts up to now are discussed. A description of our own lab test bed finishes the paper.
