Abstract

In general, knowledge about dynamic properties of tyres is an essential for any kind of research and development activities on vehicle dynamics. However, only few attempts have been made to investigate the dynamic force and moment response of tyres when slip and camber angle are being altered rapidly. Therefore the Institut für Kraftfahrwesen Aachen has developed a dynamic tyre testing facility for both motorcar and motorbike tyres. New discoveries on the steady-state and dynamic behaviour of tyres can be found with this test rig.

At first, the paper presents a short summary of the concept and design of the new ika test facility. The testing procedures that become possible with this new test rig are explained systematically.

The paper mainly focus on test results obtained on the test bench; for instance responses of tyre force and moment characteristics on sweep-input changes of slip angle are displayed in dependence of velocity, camber angle, longitudinal slip and wheel load.
