Abstract

Requirements for low occupant injuries in vehicle crashes is a constantly increasing demand. Some countries have developed a range of norms which vehicles must fulfill; if a car does not pass them, it will not be allowed to be sold there.

However, little attention has been paid until now to another part which is frequently involved in accidents with cars: pedestrians. Here we will take a look at the proposal of the European Commission concerning a norm for pedestrian protection, then we will see how Finite Element Models may be used to virtually test the vehicles and, finally, we will fix our attention in the modifications that should be made to an existing car to accomplish the proposed norm.
