Abstract

This paper presents GCI's newly developed chain for Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVTs). It is a pulling chain, developed for use in CVTs with V-shaped pulleys. The chain is lubricated with oil. Only three parts are used in the chain: pins, strips and links. These parts are simple to produce by blanking techniques, resulting in a low manufacturing price for the chain. Other essential features of the present design are its high torque capacity, its high efficiency and its minimal noise emission, because of its relatively small pitch and special pin shape. By scaling up the design, powers of up to 1MW can be transmitted in CVTs. A prototype of the chain, with a torque capacity of 170Nm, has been built and is presently being tested. The results of the first tests are very promising.
