Influence of Pulley Bending on Metal V-Belt Mechanism

Abstract

The mechanism of metal V-belts is analyzed ignoring belt elasticity and considering only pulley bending. This model suits actual CVT's for sufficiently large wrap radii. The virtual displacement approach can give an approximation to belt trajectories, tension distribution, axial force and slip. A comparison with experimental results by other authors shows a good agreement. Misalignment of the pulley can be included in the analysis. Practical formulas are proposed.
