Abstract

The enhanced ignition systems can be considered as independent efficient means for operating old model passenger car engines with leaner mixtures in view of improving their emissions and fuel consumption. The objective of this work was to assess the advantages of the new maps of fuel-air ratios and spark advances, optimized for the enhanced ignition. A method of improving the fuel consumption and emissions was proposed in this way and was applied on a Dacia passenger car engine. The experimental program, including experiments on the test bench as well as experiments with a passenger car has emphasized the possibilities of the method for significant reductions in fuel consumption and CO emissions. The method can be applied by retrofitting old model passenger car engines with a kit relatively simple and of low price.
