Abstract - This paper describes “mini-µ-road” and “LONTRA” – Arctic friction measuring devices in laboratory and on field and their correlation. The basic mechanical constructions of both devices and the method to prepare the ice surface in laboratory conditions are shortly presented. Some measurement results and the correlation between these two apparatus are briefly discussed.

The results obtained with mini-µ-road and LONTRA can be used for example in basic research work, comparing different rubber compounds/surfaces/tyres or analysing climatic conditions effect on friction. Both introduced devices are more efficient than measuring tyre properties with a car - friction tests with mini-µ-road and LONTRA are faster, easier and cheaper. Correlation between laboratory tests (mini-µ-road) and field tests (LONTRA) has proved to exist.
