Abstract - Selective results from an evaluation program of the Delphi high-pressure, single-fluid outward-opening DISI injector are presented. The presentation comprises of two components: (1) the spray characterization with the aid of imaging and laser diagnostic techniques, and (2) the combustion and emission data from the Delphi close-arranged spray-guided DISI single-cylinder engine, under various engine speed / load conditions and stratified / homogeneous combustion modes. The results show excellent spray characteristics of the injector, under ambient conditions pertinent to the spray-guided application, and the significant fuel economy and emission potential of the combustion system. The combustion data highlights the potential fuel consumption advantages of the spray-guided combustion with unthrottled engine operation.
