Abstract - The existing side impact test procedures are too old to follow new market trend, while SUVs or Pick-Up trucks have been enlarging their portion in the market recently. Therefore, new mode for the side impact test is needed to improve the safety of occupants inside the vehicle during side crash. The test mode for the side crash was proposed by IIHS and it is mainly focused on the safety of a small female and a child. The new side impact test differs from the current tests in the barrier size and impact direction, where the difference in barrier size reflects the front part of Pick-Up trucks. By employing the newly released test method, the injury of occupants and vehicle deformation turned out to be more serious and it indicates that a side air bag is necessary for the safety of the occupants. This paper includes the result of an analysis on IIHS New Side Crash Test and suggests new design concept on small size

SUV equipped with side airbags by utilizing computer simulation.
