Measurement of exhaust oxygen, upstream and downstream of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), could potentially act as a diagnostic or calibration aid in the optimisation of regeneration. Obviously such information is available from conventional exhaust gas analysers, but not all dynometer cells are thus equipped, and this information is not available for on-vehicle regenerations conducted in the field. A study was therefore undertaken to assess the suitability of the Universal Exhaust Gas Oxygen (UEGO) sensor for this purpose. Estimates of oxygen consumption by the DPF during regeneration were thus derived. These estimates were found to correspond quite closely to what would be expected from the mass of particulate determined gravimetrically.
