Abstract - AWAKE is a European project aiming at the promotion of road safety and the reduction of road accidents due to driver hypo-vigilance. This paper deals with the human-machine-interface of the AWAKE system. AWAKE warnings are multi-modal and tailored towards the actual traffic risk and individual driver parameters. The paper shows the user-centred development procedure of the AWAKE warning concept based on existing guide-lines, analytical steps and several usability experiments with vigilant and hypo-vigilant drivers in a driving simulator environment. Resulting prototypes of the AWAKE HMI for passenger cars and heavy vehicles are presented.
