Abstract

Mobile surveillance is the most required demand for the development of intelligent transportation system (ITS). Surveillance data are generated from vehicles and transmit to a control center through communication means. At present while the global positioning system (GPS) is generally considered to offer accurate location data for the mobile, the general packet radio service (GPRS) can be the best choice for always-on connection to report position and situation data to a server system via Internet. Due to the inherent characteristics of GPRS, an embedded circuit is developed with a central processing unit (CPU) with appropriate operation system (OS) to activate point-to-point protocol (PPP) as well as IP addressed transmission control protocol (TCP/IP). This paper presents the G3 system design for clients to carry out GPRS connection, and send GPS and other data to a server system and display on a geographic information system (GIS) for surveillance purpose. The system architecture and design concept are discussed. Circuit implementation and real world tests to ITS application are demonstrated. The data transmission delay, system reliability and function capability are verified in a functional server system.
