Abstract

Creation of digital cartography is nowadays an activity many companies can develop, but when we add the concept “navigable” then the complete magnitude of the problem is appearing. Aspects like what are the sources that can be used, how to collect the traffic information, how to code the information into a database are some of them to be solved. It is even more complex when the task must be developed into a standard and homogeneous process in more than 25 countries world wide, of which 14 in Europe. From a business perspective, the optimization of fieldwork, the technology tools to collect information in real time on the field, increasing the efficiency and controlling the costs are some of the continuous challenges to solve. The new technology advances on creating the databases that will help the existence of more intelligent systems that can make use of them, but also will allow real time updating systems with dynamic information, like for example the TMC codes with traffic information. Finally the work done is converted into a digital database with coverage in terms of population and number of cities with a completely navigable geometry based on streets and roads with traffic attributes incorporated (over 150 attributes per road segment).

This work has significantly improved the reliability of Navigation Systems and will allow the development of many applications within the vehicle to increase comfort level and optimize performance. But the introduction of state of the art technology into the data collection and data base creation processes has also helped in drastically increase the efficiency on creating and updating such databases. Intelligent Transportation Systems will take advantage of the next generation of navigable databases.
