Abstract - A new-generation steel-belt CVT (CVT3) has been developed for use with 3.5L engines. The CVT3 offers the advantages of a compact size, a lighter weight, a wider ratio range, and the highest torque capacity of any steel-belt CVT in the world. In addition, it provides better fuel economy and a feeling of responsive vehicle acceleration.

Many new technologies were employed in order to implement this ambitious transmission on production vehicles, including:

(1) A super ultra-flat torque converter

(2) Pulley surface treatment

(3) An independent pulley pressure system

(4) A high-pressure oil pump

(5) Improved shift control

This paper describes the main specifications of the CVT3 and the technologies above, with special focus on the hydraulic system and shift controls.
