Positioning of Highway Vehicle Using Laser Fan Beam

Abstract

This paper proposes some methods to measure the position of a vehicle by use of laser fan beams and corner-cubes on the ground. Laser transceivers on the vehicle emit fan shaped laser beams and detect reflected laser beams by the corner-cubes. Time data when laser beams return to the transceivers vary depending on heading angle and distance between the vehicle and a line of corner cubes. Then an on-board computer can calculate the position and attitude of the vehicle from the time data. This paper presents the measurement principle and some experimental results.
