Abstract

A new technique has been developed to measure vehicle motion by utilizing stereo image processing. Two stereo cameras were used; one is as a front-view camera and the other is as a down-view one, and three-dimensional images were obtained. Then the long distance areas were extracted from the front-view frame. Based on that the motion of the long distance area was affected by only rotations, the rotations were obtained from the motion of the long distance areas. By subtracting the rotations from the motion of the down-view frame, the translations of the vehicle were derived. The sampling period is 0.1 second.
