Abstract

To reduce accidents, not only passive safety has to be increased, but also active safety systems have to be employed. They inform the driver in an early stage before the situation gets critical. In order to identify emerging critical situations the environment of the vehicle has to be perceived. One important feature to be recognized is the road. With information on the position of the own vehicle on the lane the driver can be warned before leaving the lane.

This article first describes fundamental, non application specific requirements and methods for the assessment of systems for the perception of the driving environment. Subsequently, the specific methods and proceeds for the evaluation of systems for recognition of marked roads and the system-dynamical state of the own vehicle relative to the road are described. The new system "GroundView" is presented for reference measurements. These new tools enable automotive sensor engineering at a high quality level.
