Abstract

Recent years have seen the active development of a number of cutting edge technologies. One example is adaptive cruise control (ACC), which aims to reduce driver workload and improve driveability. Of the many systems that have been developed using intelligent transport system (ITS) technologies, ACC has been introduced into numerous markets in Japan and throughout the world. Another example of technology that is already on the market is the collision damage mitigation pre-crash safety system (PCS). In February 2003, Toyota developed and commercialized the world´s first phased array electronically scanning millimeter wave radar for forward obstacle detection. To enable this millimetre wave radar to be applied to the next generation PCS and ACC systems, the modulation and signal processing methods of the radar have been improved and further developed. As a result, a new millimeter wave radar was successfully completed in 2006. This article describes the newly developed next generation millimeter wave radar.
