Abstract
Toyota has successfully commercialized a number of driving support and active safety systems that use periphery-monitoring sensors for help prevent traffic accidents. Examples include millimeter wave radar adaptive cruise control (ACC), a lane monitoring system that recognizes images taken by a rear-view camera, the lane keeping assist system (LKA) that uses forward image sensors, and the pre-crash safety system (PCS) that uses the millimeter wave radar of these systems in combination with the LKA camera. Future advances in driving support and active safety systems depend on improving the performance of periphery-monitoring technology. This article describes the stereo vision system (SVS) that has been developed to improve the performance of ACC and PCS.
